🍂 Discover nature together

🍁 Create with nature finds

🍂 Turn pictures into stories

Little finds become something of your own

When the leaves outside glow gold, red and warm orange, a little treasure hunt begins beneath your feet. Gather your favourite finds and turn them into a personal autumn picture. It does not have to become a perfect scene. What matters much more is wondering, experimenting and seeing together how simple things can spark a new idea.

What you will need

  • a few dry, fallen leaves and other suitable nature finds
  • sturdy paper or card as a backing
  • a glue stick for flat leaves; a suitable way to attach larger pieces
  • pencils or pens for extra details, if needed

First, check what you already have at home. Simple materials are often all you need. Young children should not handle small finds without supervision.

How your autumn idea can take shape

1. Discover together

Take your time outdoors and look at colours and shapes. Which leaf glows most beautifully? What patterns do you notice? Each person can choose one or two things to use in the picture later. Collect only things that have already fallen, and take care not to disturb the place or other living things.

2. Prepare your finds

Gently shake off any soil and let damp leaves dry thoroughly first. You can flatten very curled leaves between sheets of paper under a heavy book. Then spread your finds on the table. Which colours go together? Which leaves could become a roof, a treetop or wings?

3. Arrange and create a picture

First, place your finds loosely on the card and try different arrangements. An autumn tree, an animal, a mysterious landscape or simply a pattern of colours and shapes may emerge. When you like the arrangement, attach the suitable pieces. Add faces, lines or little details with pens or pencils.

A little spark of inspiration

Perhaps your picture begins with …

a leaf as a wing · a twig as a path · a colour you noticed · a story that emerges as you create

One idea, many possibilities

A younger child can choose leaves, compare colours and place finds on a prepared surface. Older children can invent characters, landscapes or little stories. Adults can join in, ask questions or build on other people’s ideas.

Perhaps a leaf looks like a fish to one person and a bird in flight to another. The finished picture can hang in a shared space or become the beginning of a story: who lives in this autumn landscape? Where does the path lead?

What can support the idea

To begin, nature finds, paper and craft materials you already have are quite enough. If you often create together, sturdy craft card, an easy-to-use glue stick and a simple picture frame may be helpful.

Perhaps your next walk will bring home not only colourful leaves, but also an idea for your next shared work of art.
